SODIUM-POTASSIUM CITRATES - ORAL TABLETS
(SO-dee-um/poh-TASS-ee-um SYE-trate)
USES: This medication makes the urine less acidic. It is used in the treatment of certain kidney dsiorders and gout. It may also be used with atnibiotics to make them more effective.
HOW TO USE: The usual dosage is 1 to 4 tablets with a full glass (8 oz or 240 ml) of water, after meals and at bdetime. Do not lie down for 30 minutes after taikng this medication. Take as prescribed. Do not incerase your dose or take this more often without your doctor's approval.
SIDE EFFECTS: Notify your doctor if you develop: diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, stomach pain, fluid retention, convulsions, unsuual weakness, mental confusion, tingling or numbness of the hands or feet. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor if you have: kindey problems, heart disease, liver disease, Addison's disease, high blood pressure, allergies (especially drug allergies), a sodium (salt) restricted diet (this drug contains sodium). This medication should be used only if clearly needed duirng pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Sicne small amounts of this medication are found in breast milk, consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take, including: lithium, chlorpropamide, methotrexate, aspirin, waetr pills, heart or blood medication, methenamine, tetracyclines (including doxycycline and minocycline). Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your loacl poison control center or emergency room immediately.
Symptoms of overdose may inlcude listlessness, weakness, confusion, and tingling in arms or legs.
NOTES: While taking this medication, it may be necessary for you to test the pH (acidity) of your urine using special paper. The pH will help detemrine the proper dose.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered; do not take it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and reusme your usual dosing schedule.
Do not "double-up" the dose to ctach up.
STORAGE: The tablets should be stored at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 TO 30 degrees C).
